Creative cold shoulder tops are not easy to find.
In order to keep the trend going, many designers are going the easy route – a frill here, a ruffle there or split seams on the arms.
Here are three cold shoulder variations to consider if you like the trend. They give you the option of looking a bit different from the crowd.
Creative Cold Shoulder Tops – Style One
I call these creative styles ‘multiple cold shoulder bands’. Having two or three spaces over your shoulder and arm makes you look simply a bit more stylish. If you choose to wear these styles, it shows your individuality. Chicos has some of these styles.
The Zenergy striped tunic on the left has bands to create three cold (or bare) upper arm spaces. Both the centre and left double cold shoulder sweaters are the same style in different colours. I have included both because the centre one has the dividing band in the cold shoulder worn higher on the shoulder to create a slightly different look and a smaller cold shoulder area. It makes for more interest and versatility for yourself when you can create two different looks from the one item.
Creative Cold Shoulder Tops – Style Two
I call these creative cold shoulder tops the ‘cheat styles’. They are ways of adapting other clothes to create a single cold shoulder. When the trend has run its course, you can still wear them stylishly. Taking Shape has done this very well.
Both the top on the left and the centre are the same top – appropriately called ‘Game Changer’ style. It is made of a stretch knit. The neckline is wide and can stretch over your singlet top or tunic to create the cold shoulder look. Your choice – which shoulder you expose. This top comes in both black and red. Taking Shape has created the same style of top in a number of different material finishes and colours.
On the right is a real sneaky idea. It is the ‘Iveta’ sheer cape that can be worn over any sleeveless top, tunic or dress to create the cold shoulder style. The cape comes in black or white. Great to wear when going out anywhere you suspect the air-conditioning may be turned down colder.
Creative Cold Shoulder Tops – Style Three
Continuing on with the one cold shoulder idea is the ‘diagonal one shoulder top’. This style, if you like it, can be worn long past the time the trend disappears. Chicos has a number of these in plain colours and patterns.
The top on the left has a strap over the exposed shoulder. This makes it easier to wear your normal bra rather than a strapless bra. These styles allow you to highlight your bare arm with interesting bracelets or rings. When choosing a necklace for these, make sure that you can see it from a distance, especially when wearing a patterned top.
There is a subtle difference between ‘being on trend’ and ‘being stylish’. It’s in the small details. Multiple cold shoulder bands have you follow the trend in a thoughtful way. The Cheat Styles and the One Shoulder Styles have you giving a nod to the trend rather than being manipulated by it. And you get to keep wearing them rather than discarding them for the next trend that comes along.
