It’s amazing that something as simple as a pair of Modern Classic Shoes can change an outfit from boring to stylish in an instant. That’s shoe magic.
So as well as having your favourite classic shoes in your wardrobe it’s worth replacing some of your shoes at least once or twice a year.
Like clothes some shoes designs become modern classics.
Here is a short article on modern classic shoes. Add a new one and feel the stylish lift it gives your dressing spirit.
Modern Classic Shoes – The Wedge
Wedges are not new. They have stayed a classic heel style for a long, long time.
Wedges are shoes with a high solid heel and a thin edge under the toe and ball of your foot. They can come in a court shoe, a boot or a sandal. They are adaptable for every season. What makes a wedge a great style for baby boomers is that, because of their streamline shape, from the rear they look like stilettos. This makes them an alternative to plain court shoes. As Australia moves towards winter, wedges are a common feature on boots of all lengths. You have style with the comfort and security of a solid base that makes your walking safer. (Yes as a young woman I tripped over more than once when my stilettos caught in gaps.)
Stylish wedges vary between 6 – 7.5 cms in height. Wedge heels can be covered with the basic shoe material or they can be a contrasting wooden or cork material.
The top left summer wedge can be a formal or a casual shoe. When worn with pants the ankle strap may be hidden, depending on the length of your pants, and thus give the impression of being a court shoe. The sandal on the right incorporates the modern classic shoe trend of crossover straps. Your shoes reveal a different profile from either side. That’s a touch of difference that instantly modernises what you wear. The bottom shoes are a Dianne Ferrari style that comes in various patterns and colours.
Modern Classic Shoes – The Platform
It’s only a matter of pedantics. The platform differs from the wedge in that it has a solid heel and a thicker edge under the toe and the ball of your foot. Sometimes the heel is a classic shape and sometimes it has a more stacked and thicker shape.
The platform updates your older classic shoe style with the thickness under the front of your foot. This also makes for a slightly higher heel. The shoes in the graphic have a front height of 1 – 2 cms and a heel height of from 8 – 8.5 cms high. Platforms can be up to 10 cms high.
The top left is a classic slingback style. The bottom shoe is modern classic shoe style as it has a crossover piece. While it is hard to see, the bottom shoe also has an inside zip making it easier to put on. The stacked heel of the top right is an option simply to add a bit of difference to your wardrobe.
Modern Classic Shoes – The Hidden Wedge
The hidden wedge is mostly definitely a new trend that I predict will stay around to become a modern classic shoe style. It incorporates a design that competition skaters have used for a long time in that there is no seam line between the wedge shape and the main part of the shoe.
At the moment these are available in a lower heel. The front platform is 2 cms and the hidden wedge is 6.5 cms. I have a similar pair from a shoe shop in Paddington, Brisbane. I find them very comfortable. Note the sight design difference in the heel strap threaded through the back heel tab.
PS – Velcro straps and zips make for very modern classic shoes.
2016 Shoe Trend – The Flatform
Flatforms are the modern wedge trend for 2016. They are the same (or almost the same) height from heel to toe and range from 2 – 9 cm in height. Sometimes they curve at the toe. They are mostly a summer shoe trend.
All the shoes in this graphic are from The Iconic website. The Espadrilles on the top right have been around a long time and are the classic Flatform shoes. The newer styles add the heel to slipper styles, sandals, sneakers and thongs or flip flops.
They are claimed to be the safest shoe of all. Not sure about the 9 cm ones.
It’s the small style shoe features that make your dressing look modern. Add a pair of two of modern classic shoes to your wardrobe and you will walk with a new attitude.
Go forth and step out as a stylish baby boomer.
