Ok. I made the word ‘fabulise’ up.
It fits. Read on…..
Have you ever bought a top or dress and the style and fit is great for you. BUT! The colour or the pattern looked good or okay in the shop. Now you have it home it just doesn’t feel right. It really needs a bit more oomph. You are tempted to return it or hide it away until you can get rid of it. As well as that, you are beating yourself up internally over another failed fashion choice.
Sshh! Here’s a little style secret that you can use to ‘fabulise it’ ie to make it look 100% better on you.
The secret is an item that could become quite indispensable in your wardrobe. It’s one that is often overlooked as a fashion item. It’s not black and it’s not brightly coloured.
The Secret is the Skin-toned Cream or Beige Scarf.
And it’s the stylish Baby Boomer’s secret weapon.
What is the Power of the Skin-toned Scarf
It’s power to ‘fabulise’ any not-so-good colour or pattern lies in the fact that it brings the emphasis above your clothes to your face. Find a skin-tone version of cream or beige that you love. It may exactly match your skin-colour or be a little lighter or brighter. DO NOT go for a darker skin-tone colour.
The idea is to make your face sparkle because after all, that’s what you want any colour or pattern you wear to do for you.
PLUS – If you are wearing this item to a sit-down event, the cream or beige scarf will be more noticeable than your top or dress. Other people then see the best of you. This will be especially true if you are wearing it over a medium or darker colour or pattern.
You can go oblong like the middle and left one or a square folded in half to create a triangle as on the right. You can go expensive like the Harrison & Morgan Silk & Lurex Stole (AUD $288) on the left from Polyvore. You can go lace as in the sold-out middle scarf from Chicos or tassel-fringed like the Petal Dolls Wrap scarf (£20) from Marisota. Choose a style that goes with your personality eg I would choose the one on the left because ‘Natural’ is part of my personality. I would wear an oblong scarf with fringing at the bottom but not when it is on every hem.
The best skin-toned scarves do not have a pattern. They may be textured. You want something simple that does not clash with the pattern or texture of the top or dress you aren’t completely happy with.
The Trick to Wearing a Fabulous Scarf
As in the illustrations above, the scarves are worn looser around the neck. Your goal is to leave some neck space between your scarf and your face. You do this so that your skin-toned scarf highlights and enhances the natural glow of your skin. How you tie the scarf is up to you.
If you don’t like wearing scarves, a skin-toned jacket as in this leather one from Ezibuy may work better. The jacket can be done up or left undone to show a tiny bit of the not-so-good top or dress. This jacket has horizontal pin-tucking as a texture feature. I would choose one with no texture added. It doesn’t have to be a classic design. It can be a modern classic style.
Alternatively you could wear a skin-toned wrap jacket.
The challenge with a closed skin-tone jacket or wrap is that, from a distance, you can look naked from the waist up.
What Doesn’t Work
The power of this Baby Boomer style secret is that the skin-toned option is large enough to draw the attention away from your not-so-good top or dress. Wearing jewellery in skin-tones does not create an effect that overcomes your not-so-good clothes.
Only a scarf or jacket will do the job.
A skin-tone scarf also works to ‘fabulise’ your great colours. Add jewellery in your dress or top colour and your skin-tone scarf or jacket will a real ‘style feature’ on you. With your best patterns, you will need to do a ‘one-woman fashion parade’ to decide if adding a skin-toned item makes you feel even happier. Your body will tell you the answer by your posture.
Action Steps (because Information is not Transformation):
- Cream or beige scarves can be found anywhere. Keep your eyes open and try one on when you find it.
- If, after you have added a skin-tone scarf, you still don’t feel 100% happy in your ‘not-so-good’ top or dress, get rid of it.
