‘When I’m shopping, I’d really like to know what accessories go well with what I am considering buying.’ is a common lament of women of all ages.
Isn’t it embarrassing that so many of us make this confession? We have reached an age where, as a baby boomer, we can’t easily put clothes and accessories together to create a complete look that satisfies us!
You need to know that there is a simple solution. And you don’t need an App for it.
It does however require learning the secret to dressing stylishly. Then you must be courageous ie be committed and focused. And most importantly of all, start putting it into practice.
We were not taught it from childhood because our mothers did not know how to accessorise stylishly either.
Read on. Break the cycle. Save dollars. From today on, enjoy the dressing game because it is a game.
Here’s the Secret to Dressing Stylishly at Any Age –
Know your 3-6 Best Colours.
Know your 3 Personality Styles.
Stick to these 80-90% of the time.
As women we most often get into dressing trouble when we emotionally shop or when we bargain shop. This is when you impulse buy and then find that you have no jewellery, scarves, shoes or handbag to go with it. Many stores and online stores do not sell the complete package. Birdsnest is one of the few that give you completely styled outfits. But! You may not like their accessory options. Or they may have sold out.
Know Your 3 – 6 Best Colours
The first step is to know your correct season and which are the best skin, hair and eye colours for you. Then, after discussion with me on the needs of your work and lifestyle, you choose up to three other colours that you really like from your palette.
You are not choosing an individual colour shade like ‘royal purple’. This is what can turn women off having their colours done as they believe that the best purple (or your special colour) is the only versions of that shade you are ‘supposed to wear’.
Not so. While that may be your best purple, you are choosing to wear all the shades of purple that are in your palette. Ah, this makes the dressing game more enjoyable.
So you choose from – black, white, beige, brown, grey, navy, yellow, red, green, blue, purple, orange, olive, aqua, teal, pink, gold and silver. Each colour has its different shades. It’s my job to show you what to look for in a red or pink, for example. Your individual Colour Palette is your training wheels until you get so good at it that you don’t need to refer to it anymore.
For women who love to wear Black only. Or any other single colour. You will be more visible and stylish when you choose 3-6 colours from your individual Colour Palette for your accessories.
Then you focus. You only look for accessories in your chosen colours as they will go with clothes you buy only in your chosen colours.
Know Your 3 Personality Styles
Most women know two of their personality styles. It is the third we keep hidden in our hearts for various reasons. When you find them and learn how to interpret them, you will be focused on only buying clothes and accessories in colours and patterns and styles that represent your unique personality mix.
All clothes and accessories have a personality. For example – black pants are usually Classic, a black lace top is usually Sensual and a black knit jacket is usually Natural. Floral jewellery can be Feminine or Dramatic. Striped clothes can be Natural, Classic, Sensual or Dramatic. Brown shoes can be Natural, Classic or Elegant depending on the shoe design.
When you feel courageous and ready to reveal your true self with all its parts to the world, then you will be committed to only buying clothes and accessories in the three personality styles that self-confidently reveal you. It is not restrictive. Play the game and you will find, often when you least expect it, clothes and accessories that are perfect for you.
Stick to It 80- 90% of the Time
No-one’s perfect. Not even us Image Consultants. We all make buying mistakes. Every skill starts off with imperfection. The road to excellence is marked by persistence and a sense of humour.
I am not naturally Feminine. I look too impish. But if I wanted to add an item that is Feminine like this necklace, I can break my rules if I feel like it. As long as I am aware of what I am doing and feel comfortable wearing it often, that’s fine. It’s an indulgence and one I would not spend a lot of money on.
