‘When is Black and White not Black and White?’
That’s an interesting question. And when you read on for the answer to that, you’ll discover style secrets that no-one else tells you.
In this article I am concentrating on black and white patterns.
Black and white together suits most women. Autumns and Springs who have warm colourings will look better in black and cream. Unfortunately this is a much rarer combination than black and white. You can still wear black and white. It depends on the pattern, the proportions of colour and how close to your face it is. Below the waist is fine for all women.
Let’s get down to business. Read on for awesome secrets to help you easily become a stylish baby boomer or stylish woman of any age.
Awesome Secret 1 – It’s All in the Proportions
Black and white stripes are a combination that never goes out of fashion.
Most women look at all black and white stripes as the same. But! These two variations of the same casual dress from Ezibuy clearly show the difference. In the first dress the white stripes are twice the width of the black ones. In the second the colours are reversed. What do you see?
Where the white stripes are larger, the dress appears much brighter and more modern. Even with a high neckline, it brings more colour to your face. The larger black stripes give a classic look and can dull your face depending on your hair colour.
Does the dress on the left make you look bigger? From the reviews the style is semi-fitted which is the best style to have. Only you can decide when you try it on. Stylish women do not always choose the safe (ie more black) option.
When the pattern mix is equal black and white, it depends on the pattern. The Marisota top on the left is a mix of different houndstooth patterns. (It is one fabric not patchwork pieces.) The zebra print on the left from Chicos is an even mix of black and white. With both of these, the white colour is more dominant.
The Marisota top in the middle is a ‘messy artist’s palette’ pattern. Well, that’s my description. I am tending towards the ‘black’ being dominant as the pattern has no clear distinctions. You would have to try it on to decide for yourself.
Awesome Secret 2 – Modern Classic Black and White
In both of these designs the white stripe is fractionally larger than the black stripe. This makes the white stand out more.
At first glance the Chicos Petite jacket is old-style classic. Look at the back and you will see a triangular insert. Plus, the back is shorter than the front. It is worn over a longer top. These features make it a modern classic rather than a dated 80s jacket.
The dress on the right is Mc Call’s pattern 7084. It is a classic shirtmaker dress. If you remember those, you are a Baby Boomer woman. What makes it a modern classic is the splicing of the material to give a unique look (very had to show in a small graphic). It has a semi-fitted top with the princess line from-the-shoulder.
Awesome Secret 3- Combined with Solid Black or White
The proportions of black to white are even in the top and pants from Chicos. The half and half colour combination makes you look much brighter. You stand out in a nice way. It is comfortable for Introverts and bright enough for Extroverts to embrace. If the top and the pants are worn with white, it makes the combination even brighter.
Do check the style from as far away from your mirror as possible as these spots change to a diamond pattern from a distance.
The plus size Sara wrap skirt from Ezibuy has wider black diagonal stripes. Note how the illustration includes part of a white top. Again, this makes the white more prominent. A black top would make the black stand out more.
A word on the styles. The top has a modern ‘sharkbite’ hem. It’s probably in reference to an open-mouth shape with the sides curved longer. This now becomes a ‘modern classic’ rather than a boring, straight-hemmed classic. If you are not a standard height, cross-over skirt hems can be tricky. They are hard to adjust. The best length is crossing just above the top of your knees.
Reminder Tip –
With black and white patterns, always stand well back from the mirror. Check whether your impression of the pattern changes (as in the spot to diamond top above). Other people are not always standing two feet from you. At this distance you will also be clearer whether the top look more black or more white.
Action Steps (because Information is not Transformation):
- Check your black and white clothes. Are they looking dull black, bright black or brighter white? Brighter is more stylish.
- Do you have cool skin or cool-coloured hair? More white than black will really make you shine.
